The exhibition of Thomas Tsang, curated by Francesca Referza, opens Saturday, November 8th at 7pm, at Quarter relocated. The event is part of the initiatives connected to Artissima 15. The New York architect Thomas Tsang has specifically designed the installation project MONOROOMHOTEL for this occasion. Starting from the observation that during the events of the fair the availability to spend the night decreases and incidentally prices increase, Tsang has imagined the transformation one of the two rooms of Quarter relocated into one hotel room with the following alternating hours: Gallery Hours 12.00 – 16.00 Hotel Hours 19.00 – 11.00.

The gallery therefore, upon request, is transformed into a MONOROOMHOTEL at the disposal of artists, authorized personnel and visitors of the fair, who in this way have a way to sleep over in Torino during the days of Artissima at a reasonable price. The only rule that must be respected is an one night stand, that is, to not stay over for more than a night, with an amusing double effect that in an ironic and lighthearted way alludes to a certain reality of the ethnically diverse neighbourhood of San Salvario, a place where it has been known as the red-light district, where the Quarter is located. The installation consists of a raised platform, elevated 50-60cm above the original floor formed by archipelago of 15 (as the edition of Artissima) irregular cabinet doors paired with a key to each, inserted in their respective keyholes and inescapably triggers a great curiosity. Only by opening the doors of the cabinet can one utilize that which it contains: a twin-sized bed, a locker , a table, a lamp, a storage room, a TV, etc.

The idea of walking on a surface consisting of volumes simply juxtaposed one to the others, as an irregular chessboard, generates immediately a psychophysical uncertainty accented by the opening of the cabinets which turn from simple containers to real and proper doors in which it is theoretically possible to enter. From the uncertainty of the sensation of physical instability one passes to a much more profound insecurity, deriving from the awareness of not having control of what is underneath. It’s like saying that life skins through under the surface.
The other point developed in the project has in turn to do with the idea of drawn landscape. Thinking in these terms at MONOROOMHOTEL one shifts from a landscape designed in surface to one recreated artificially through the measured addition of horizontal and vertical elements as well as of objects which give the impression of being present in a room. Almost like a capriccio indoor. The capricci were not real sights but an envisioned landscapes, ideas connected to the state of sleep. Envisioned, underlined Thomas Tsang, whose worked began in Spring '08 at the American Academy in Rome, touched the idea of ‘veduta’ - leads to eyed close… or as time when the eyes are shut. Actually the state of dreaming begins when all of the doors (eyes) are closed.

Thomas Tsang born on the Island of Borneo in Sabah, Malaysia, 1974. He studied at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) in Los Angeles and received his Bachelor of Architecture from Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, 2000.
